About Us

Our aim is supporting parents as their first and most important educators by involving them in their children’s education and in the full life of the setting.
We pride ourselves on a professional and caring approach.
We aim to provide children with resources and equipment that help to consolidate and extend their knowledge, skills, interests and aptitudes.
We provide a staffing ratio in line with the requirements of the National Standards for Day Care to ensure that children have sufficient individual attention and to guarantee care and education of a high quality.

St Mary’s Playgroup is a community group with a charitable status and run by YOU the parents of its children through a committee, which is elected at the annual general meeting. The committee is elected to manage the playgroup and to administer and be responsible for the policies of the playgroup. Parents are encouraged to use this opportunity to have their say in the running and organisation of the playgroup.

St Mary’s Playgroup is a member of the Pre School learning alliance and is inspected and registered by OFSTED. Our Ofsted number: 133606. Parents are welcome to read the ofsted report which is also available on the OFSTED website.
St Mary’s Playgroup accepts children from 2 years up to the age of 5 years. We arrange our waiting list in birth order and we will contact parents when the child reaches 2 or when a space becomes available.

St. Mary’s Playgroup is a feeder playgroup to a number of local schools. We are not attached to St. Mary’s Church of England Primary School or any other school.

Playgroup is open during term times only, on the following days and times:

Monday – Friday 9.00 – 15.00

Early morning starts are available every day from 8.30 to 9.00am. Sessions cost £1.50. This is an essential session for those dropping other children at school, or for working parents.

Morning sessions run from 9.00 until 12.00 (noon) and afternoon sessions run from 12.00 (noon) until 15.00.

Children are able to stay all day from Monday – Friday. Alternatively, children can attend for mornings only, afternoons only or a mix of both.

Children are able to stay for lunch from Monday-Friday. This is open to children who stay all day and also to children coming in for the afternoon only. Parents are asked to provide a healthy packed lunch and drink for their child in a named lunch box
St Mary’s Playgroup Aims

Our setting aims to:

Provide high quality care and education for children under the age of five.
Work in partnership with parents to help children learn and develop.
Offer children and their parents a service that promotes equality and diversity.
Aim to offer a safe, secure and happy environment in which children can learn as they play.
Playgroup provides opportunities for children to make friends and prepare for going to school.

Themes and activities

We use themes which are brought to us by the children and our activities are based on these themes. Sessions are structured and children have a range of activities to choose from.

Activities are chosen to offer a range of experiences for the children. Staff will encourage children to do an activity but we cannot make children do a particular activity. Children will not always bring something home; sometimes we do activities for the wall and children’s files but this does not mean the children have not done anything in the session.

‘Show & Tell’ Days

‘Show and Tell’ days are held on a different day, each week. Children are encouraged to bring in a favourite toy or item on these days to show to their classmates. As well as being fun, the activity helps improve confidence and develop their social and communication skills.

‘Show & Tell’ dates are displayed on the board outside the main entrance to playgroup and on our website home page.

Fees and methods of payment

St. Mary’s playgroup is in receipt of government funding for three and four year olds. (Funding begins the term after your child’s 3rd birthday). If your child is eligible for a funded place, please speak to a member of staff.

To find out our charges for non-funded places, please contact a member of staff or drop in to see us in person (no appointment needed).
